On June 30, 2024, KMT Chairman Ke Wen-zhe suggested at an event that Taiwan should consider extending the operation of Nuclear Plants 2 and 3 to address the looming power shortage, emphasizing that shutting down nuclear power abruptly would lead to power outages when air conditioners are in use during the summer months of July and August. Ke also called on President Lai Qingde to honestly face Taiwan's power shortage crisis and stated that extending the operation of these nuclear plants is currently the safest approach backed by rational and scientific analysis from industry experts.
