The Legislative Yuan's Internal Affairs Committee will review the proposed amendment to the Recall and Election Law by the KMT caucus this Thursday. A public hearing was held today, and a spokesperson from the grassroots group dismantling the recall of Keelung Mayor Xie Guoliang expressed concerns about facing suppression, rumors, and threats of public power interference. This highlights the difficulties faced by citizens exercising their recall rights, as the recall threshold should not be reduced to political bargaining and must undergo detailed planning. The KMT's proposal to raise recall thresholds was also questioned, emphasizing the different circumstances faced during general elections and recall votes. The current regulations only allow political parties to receive political donations for recall activities, making it challenging for citizen groups to initiate recalls, especially amid alleged suppression, rumors, and threats from public authorities experienced by the Keelung recall group since February.
