On July 5, 2024, Nationalist Party legislators Chen Hsueh-sheng and Chen Yu-chen proposed an amendment to the 'Offshore Island Development Act,' including a clause allowing Chinese investments in island construction. The proposal was sent back to the committee by DPP legislators during a legislative session without objections. DPP legislator Huang Chieh criticized the move, urging the Nationalist Party to reconsider as the proposal could jeopardize Taiwan's security by allowing Chinese firms to undertake projects with sensitive national security information. Huang highlighted the importance of protecting the front line islands such as Kinmen and Matsu, emphasizing the need for meticulous planning to ensure national security is not compromised.
