KMT to Raise Recall Threshold Next Week, DPP Will Fully Block

Reported 12 months ago

The Legislative Yuan's Internal Administration Committee will review the draft amendment of the Public Officials Election and Recall Act next week, with the KMT proposing to raise the recall threshold. In addition to the current requirement of obtaining more affirmative votes than negative votes and having affirmative votes greater than one-fourth of the total number of voters in the original electoral district, a new provision requiring votes exceeding the number of votes the recalled official received when elected will be added. DPP Legislative Yuan caucus secretary-general Wu Shih-yao criticized the KMT for deviating from public opinion and self-serving amendments, calling it a path towards self-destruction. The DPP will not support it but will instead fully block it.
