Kosovo's Stray Dog Crisis: Pristina Offers Cash Incentives for Adoption as City Deals with Over 4,000 Strays

Reported about 1 year ago

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, faces a severe stray dog crisis with as many as 4,000 strays roaming the streets. In response, Mayor Perparim Rama has proposed a unique solution by offering a monthly subsidy of 50 euros (approximately 1,700 New Taiwan dollars) to individuals who adopt a stray dog. The city has started capturing stray dogs and plans to continue until all dogs are off the streets, with captured dogs being vaccinated, sterilized, and prepared for adoption. While the initiative has garnered support from some residents like Sami Haxhaj who adopted 10 dogs, there are critics questioning the financial sustainability of the plan. Rama remains steadfast in his belief that the program can effectively reduce the number of stray dogs and enhance residents' quality of life.
