Lack of Safety Inspections for Stair Lift Chairs Despite National Standards, Legislative Yuan Says 'Neglecting Responsibility'

Reported 11 months ago

A preliminary estimate suggests that over 800,000 people with mobility issues live in old apartments without elevators. However, despite having national standards, stair lift chairs are not undergoing safety inspections. The Legislative Yuan pointed out that the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, and Ministry of Health and Welfare, which approve products for market release, are not the competent authorities, resulting in neglect. With the market for these products being small, some manufacturers are not investing in equipment for safety testing. While there are national standards for stair lift chairs, the lack of certified oversight renders these standards practically ineffective. The issue of the absence of safety checks both pre-sale and post-installation suggests a grey area, leaving consumers to assess the risk themselves before purchasing.
