On the night of June 23, 2024, at 10:27 p.m., a 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in Hualien. The epicenter was located 18.3 kilometers south of the Hualien County Government, near the coast, with a depth of 17 kilometers. The earthquake was felt in Hualien, Nantou, Yilan, Taitung, Taichung, Yunlin, Chiayi, Miaoli, Changhua, Hsinchu, Chiayi City, Tainan, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Taipei, Pingtung, and Penghu. This earthquake was considered an aftershock of the 0403 earthquake, with over 1500 aftershocks reported since the main quake. The frequency of aftershocks is decreasing, and it is estimated that they may continue until July 3.
