The Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan announced the 2023 national death statistics today, with malignant tumors, heart diseases, and pneumonia ranking in the top three causes of death. Compared to the previous year, cancer and heart diseases remain in second place, with cancer holding the top spot for 42 consecutive years while COVID-19 has dropped from third to sixth place. The total number of deaths in Taiwan was 206,675, a decrease of 2,863 people or 1.4% from the previous year, largely due to a decrease in deaths from COVID-19. Additionally, the top ten cancers causing death include lung cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, and ovarian cancer.
