LAUSD to Implement Full Ban on Student Cellphone Use in School Campuses Starting January Next Year

Reported 8 months ago

In a recent decision by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), starting from January 2025, students will be completely prohibited from using cellphones on school grounds to reduce distractions, anxiety, and cyberbullying. The resolution was proposed by board member Nick Melvoin, highlighting the negative impact of excessive cellphone use on learning and social interaction. The ban, passed with a 5-2 vote, will cover all school hours, including lunch and breaks, with considerations for implementing strategies like providing cellphone storage lockers, physically restricting devices, and using technology to limit social media access. While some support the decision for improving learning and social skills, concerns include enforcement challenges and addressing students' reliance on alternative devices like smartwatches.
