Lava continues to spurt from a volcano in southwestern Iceland following its fifth eruption since December, with the latest event being the most powerful. The eruption threatened the coastal town of Grindavik and led to the evacuation of the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. The fissure extended 2.1 miles and the amount of lava flowing was likened to burying the Wembley Stadium pitch under 49 feet of lava every minute. The volcano's eruptions are characterized by rapid and powerful starts followed by quick diminishments, leaving researchers uncertain about when the volcanic activity will end.
