Legislative Yuan Investigative Power Creates Discord among Blue Camp Members; Greens Call for '6 Heroes' to Defect and Support Overriding Proposal

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 10, 2024, at 7:43 am, the Legislative Yuan had passed the third reading of the Parliament Powers Act granting the legislature investigative powers. There are differing opinions within the Kuomintang on how to exercise these powers, with some suggesting mirroring prosecutors' case handling methods while others proposing the establishment of a legislative investigator. While the Democratic Progressive Party supports the executive's veto on parliamentary powers amendments, lacking seats, KMT Chair Ko Wen-je calls for Blue-White coalition members to defect. The Legislative Yuan is preparing to thoroughly investigate issues such as Covid-19 vaccines, rapid tests, optoelectronics, and imported eggs. If the veto fails, both the DPP and the executive will file constitutional interpretations once the law is enacted. As the process committee is expected to set a date to review the veto motion on the 11th, attendance by Premier Cho Jung-tai will be at the Legislative Yuan's full committee hearing before a vote is held.
