A local group in Keelung is working to recall Mayor Xie Guoliang, sparking debate in the Legislative Yuan where the Internal Affairs Committee will review amendments to the Recall Act this Thursday. Blue camp legislator Xu Yuzhen has proposed amendments such as disallowing recalls for officials with less than a year in office and requiring recall votes to surpass the votes the official received when elected. The Nationalist Party argues that these changes are necessary to prevent a minority from blocking the will of the majority. The proposed amendments will undergo public hearings and committee review this week, with tensions expected to rise between the blue and green camps during the process.
