On July 1, 2024, Lin Wenjie, deputy head of the Mainland Affairs Council, stated that treating China as a country is not absurd and is essentially two countries. Ma Ying-jeou Foundation director Hsiao Hsu-cheng responded by suggesting that if the Mainland Affairs Council continues to publicly treat China as another country, it should lose its reason for existence. He also advised Liang to resign voluntarily and recommended President Lai disband the council to avoid wasting taxpayer money. Hsiao emphasized that Taiwan and the mainland belong to the same country according to the ROC Constitution and criticized the current government for deviating from the One China Principle and the 1992 Consensus while advocating for Taiwan independence, stating that the 1992 Consensus is the cradle of peace across the strait.
