The Federal Trade Commission has approved a rule prohibiting noncompete agreements in most industries, including health care, to prevent employees from pursuing other jobs or starting competing businesses. However, the rule does not apply to nonprofit hospitals and health care facilities, where most medical professionals work. The rule aims to lower health care costs and increase worker mobility, but nonprofit hospitals argue it will lead to bidding wars for physicians and reduce patient access. The rule is set to take effect in September, and while legal challenges are expected, physician and nursing groups hope it will prompt employers to stop using noncompetes and encourage more states to ban them.
