Microsoft's LinkedIn has disabled a tool that used sensitive personal data for targeted advertising to adhere to EU rules on online content. This decision came after a complaint by civil society organizations to the European Commission. The move was made to align with the Digital Services Act, which requires online intermediaries to provide users with more control over their data usage and prohibits the use of certain sensitive personal data for targeted ads. LinkedIn's adjustment involved removing the ability to create advertising audiences in Europe based on membership in LinkedIn Groups, aiming to prevent indirect targeting based on special categories of data. The European Commission welcomed this action and will monitor LinkedIn's compliance with the DSA.
