While eating too much liquorice can have negative health effects due to glycyrrhizin, a chemical compound in the root, liquorice root also contains health-beneficial substances that act as an expectorant for coughs and colds. Dr. Christian Schulze from the University of Greifswald in Germany suggests that consuming liquorice in moderation, such as in herbal teas or cough syrups, is safe and effective for relieving coughs. Although liquorice root is no longer used therapeutically for conditions like heartburn, it remains recommended for colds when combined with other herbal medications.
