Due to the severe impact of earthquakes on Hualien's tourism industry, despite government subsidies, overall occupancy rates have not improved. Some lodging businesses are resorting to drastic measures, including offering zero-cost weekday stays, to cope with the tourism slump. Following the closure of Quqiu Senlai in Fenglin and plans to temporarily shut down Hualien's Fuyuan Butterfly Valley Resort from August to December, the tourism downturn has spread to central and southern regions as well. Despite promotional efforts from travel agencies like KKday and AsiaYo, Hualien's lodging rates remain below 20%, prompting some businesses to offer unprecedented discounts in hopes of attracting more visitors.
