Recognizing the signs of low testosterone, also known as hypogonadism or "low T," can be challenging as symptoms like tiredness, weight gain, and low sex drive are nonspecific and easily attributed to other causes, especially in older males. Common symptoms include abnormal breast development, decreased muscle mass, depression, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and low libido. Low testosterone affects around 4 to 5 million males in the U.S., with 1 in 4 men aged 40 to 70 experiencing low levels. Diagnosis involves blood tests, and treatment options include lifestyle changes and testosterone replacement therapy, with various forms available like oral tablets, injections, patches, gels, or creams. Managing TRT side effects and regular monitoring are essential, while individuals with untreated prostate or breast cancer, recent heart issues, or pituitary gland-related low T may not be suitable candidates for TRT.
