Low Wages Concern Over 530,000 Young Workers in Taiwan

Reported 11 months ago

A recent report from Taiwan's Ministry of Labor shows that over 530,000 young workers, aged 18-35, contribute an average of only NT$27,787 (approx. US$1,000) to their retirement fund, with wages hovering around the minimum wage level of NT$27,470 (approx. US$990). This 'young poor' phenomenon is especially prevalent in the education, accommodation, food services, and wholesale and retail industries. Scholars suggest that students should engage in interdisciplinary learning while in school, receive more information on future salary changes, and align educational structures with industry developments in sectors like AI and semiconductors. Experts also recommend that young professionals in Taiwan prepare themselves for higher future salary prospects. Overall, the concern is on improving the low wages faced by the younger generation in the country.
