Mai Liao Power Plant Extension Criticized by Environmental Groups: Lai Administration Accused of Breaking Promises

Reported 10 months ago

Taiwan Power Company and Formosa Plastics Group signed a 25-year power purchase contract for the Mai Liao coal-fired power plant, with Unit 1 supposed to cease operations and be decommissioned by the end of last month. However, due to the unit not meeting the original contract targets, Taiwan Power Company announced that it can generate power until the end of 2025. Environmental groups and local residents criticized the decision, accusing the Ministry of Economic Affairs of claiming there is no power shortage while allowing the unit's extension, and heavily criticized the Lai administration for breaking promises. The move comes as the nation faces a high demand for electricity during the upcoming summer season, with nuclear power plant Unit 1 set to shut down next month, raising concerns about power supply. Environmental experts and residents emphasized the health risks associated with coal-fired plants and urged for the timely decommissioning of the Mai Liao plant, transitioning to gas-fired power generation for environmental justice.
