On June 28, 2024, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) held a press conference, led by MAC Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh, to issue an 'orange' travel alert for Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. In response, Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) urged caution for Taiwanese citizens, highlighting the oppressive actions of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the recent 'punishing independence with 22 rules' law which threatens freedom and democracy advocates. The DPP emphasized the increasing risks Taiwanese face when traveling to China due to the CCP's aggressive laws and lack of respect for human rights, urging citizens to reconsider non-essential trips. The DPP also criticized the CCP's ambiguous definitions and opaque judicial processes, stressing the importance of assessing the necessity of visiting China and registering with the MAC's 'Dynamic Registration System for Taiwanese Traveling to Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau' to avoid becoming victims under oppressive Chinese laws. The DPP urged the CCP to abandon its harmful actions, and highlighted the necessity of the raised travel warning to protect Taiwanese national security amidst escalating tensions between Taiwan and China.
