On June 9, a man from mainland China drove a speedboat directly into the restricted area of Tamsui River, claiming he wanted to 'seek freedom'. The man, with a background in the People's Liberation Army, was apprehended and his boat seized by Taiwan Coast Guard personnel. The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office responded that this incident was purely an 'individual action' and that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities don't need to overreact. The man, surnamed Ruan, later revealed that he had been restricted from leaving mainland China due to anti-Communist remarks made on WeChat, prompting his desperate attempt to flee.
