Mainland Imposes Death Penalty for Taiwan Independence; Eric Chu: Beijing Has No Jurisdiction over Republic of China

Reported 8 months ago

On June 21, 2024, China announced new regulations with 22 articles for punishing 'Taiwan independence' elements, with the maximum penalty being death. Eric Chu emphasized that mainland China has no jurisdiction over the Republic of China or the Taiwanese people. He urged restraint to avoid escalating hostility between the two sides, advocating dialogue over confrontation. Chu criticized President Lai Ching-te for adopting antagonistic policies since taking office, stating that the Democratic Progressive Party's confrontational approach is detrimental to Taiwan. The Taiwan Affairs Office said Beijing's actions will only fuel divisions between people on both sides and hinder positive cross-strait interactions.
