On June 10, 2024, a man from China landed in Tamsui via speedboat, raising concerns about the lack of coastal defense. The national security unit has initiated an investigation to ensure the normalcy of coastal patrols, question the man, and order a review to discipline negligent personnel. The man reportedly had his small boat released from a larger vessel offshore before heading directly to land in Tamsui. Military officials mentioned that with advanced ships and weather reports, it is not impossible for a small speedboat to cross the Taiwan Strait undetected and penetrate the coast, emphasizing the need for enhanced patrols. Politicians from both the KMT and DPP stressed the importance of clarifying the man's intentions and strengthening maritime surveillance in the future. Despite numerous radar stations along Taiwan's coasts, small speedboats are hard to detect due to sea clutter and the challenge of identifying suspicious targets among regular sea traffic.
