In an article published on June 25, 2024, Michael Cunningham, a researcher at The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center, pointed out that the decades-long 'strategic ambiguity' in US policy towards Taiwan has effectively deterred conflict in the Taiwan Strait. While suggesting that abandoning this ambiguity and providing formal security commitments could have reasons, such clear strategies may lead to more problems than they solve. Maintaining strategic ambiguity is seen as the best way to uphold both US and Taiwan's interests until circumstances change.
