Maintaining the Status Quo between the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council deputy minister Liang Wen-chieh stated that in essence, Taiwan and China are two separate countries. Premier Su Tseng-chang stressed in an interview that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other, emphasizing the need to maintain this status quo. Former President Ma Ying-jeou's office director Hsiao Hsu-cheng suggested that the Mainland Affairs Council should be dissolved following Liang's comments. Premier Su reiterated the importance of upholding the current situation and working towards regional stability in the Asia-Pacific region during a legislative session briefing at the Parliament.
