Malayan tapir 'Hero' from Yokohama Zoo in Japan, who was meant to be exchanged with Taipei Zoo, tragically passed away during transportation to Taiwan, with an autopsy showing death was caused by hyperthermia leading to systemic circulatory failure, coagulopathy, and pulmonary edema. The 2-year-old tapir was discovered stiff and lifeless upon arrival in Taiwan, with visible injuries and signs of distress post-mortem, ruling out infectious diseases and attributing the death to heat stress. The incident, deemed rare, will lead to a thorough review and improvement of animal exchange and transportation procedures for future international species exchanges.
