Malayan tapir 'Hero,' a 2-year-old from Yokohama Zoo in Japan, was supposed to visit Taipei Zoo for an exchange program but was found dead upon arrival in Taiwan, causing deep regret for both Taiwan and Japan. The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was heat stress-induced systemic circulatory failure, coagulation dysfunction, and pulmonary edema. Although 'Hero's' sperm quality and quantity were good, they were deemed unusable as they had been 'overcooked.' The primary decision now is to conduct a thorough pathological autopsy for further understanding. The incident highlights the importance of proper transport conditions for animals to prevent heat stress-related fatalities.
