Malaysia Confirms Participation in BRICS as Chinese Premier Visits

Reported over 1 year ago

On September 6, 2023, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed in an interview with Chinese media that Malaysia will join the BRICS group composed of China and Russia, among others. Anwar's office verified this statement today to Reuters, following reports from Chinese media. The BRICS group, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been expanding its membership to challenge the Western-dominated global order. The confirmation comes as Chinese Premier Li Keqiang visits Malaysia for a three-day visit to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations with Malaysia, with plans to sign agreements including an updated 5-year economic cooperation plan and potentially a Belt and Road memorandum of understanding.
