A man from Taoyuan stole a minivan and headed south, but was apprehended by Pingtung police who he then refused to stop for, resulting in a collision with a patrol car. Initially sentenced to 5 and 9 months for theft and obstructing official duties, respectively, the High Court in Kaohsiung reversed the obstruction charge as it was determined that the police car rear-ended him due to braking late. The man claimed he had schizophrenia and wasn't aware of the situation until after being informed by the police. The theft charge appeal was rejected, and the case remains pending.
