On June 17, 2024, a man surnamed Ruan from Mainland China was arrested by the Coast Guard after speeding a boat into the Tamsui River in Taiwan. He was detained for violating immigration laws and expressed 'no regrets' for coming to Taiwan. Ruan, a former PLA Navy captain, is now retired and has faced financial troubles, allegedly being blacklisted by banks for defaulting on loans. Claiming he came to Taiwan for freedom, he attempted to evade authorities but was eventually apprehended and is facing deportation back to Mainland China.
