On June 11, 2024, the case of Chen Hong-jia, who in 2019 killed his cohabiting girlfriend in Taichung City along with their 10-month-old twin sons, saw a reversal in the second trial verdict from death penalty to life imprisonment by a collegiate bench after the Supreme Court found the previous death penalty reasoning vague, leading to the decision being overturned and sent back for reconsideration by the Taichung High Court. The court expressed that there is still potential for Chen to reform and reintegrate into society, citing his remorse and willingness to actively make amends. Chen's girlfriend's family, however, is unable to accept this verdict, having an adamant stance supporting the death penalty. The case remains appealable for a third trial.
