In New Taipei City, a 50-year-old man surnamed Lin sneaked into a homestay in Jiufen last July and stole two ice pops, valued at around 30 NTD. Despite the low value, he was convicted of aggravated theft under the Criminal Code and sentenced to 6 months in prison, with the option to pay a fine of 180,000 NTD. The defendant had prior convictions for theft and drug offenses, having been released from prison in January last year and reoffended within six months.
