Man's Death Misattributed to Brain-Eating Amoeba? Test Results Reveal Cause as 'Amoebic Dysentery'

Reported 8 months ago

A man who was initially reported to have died from a brain infection caused by the 'Naegleria fowleri' amoeba, commonly known as a brain-eating amoeba, was later clarified by the Kaohsiung City Health Bureau to have actually died from 'amoebic dysentery,' with no direct evidence of the presence of the 'Naegleria fowleri' amoeba. The man had shown symptoms such as headache, poor appetite, and limb weakness, leading to a brain biopsy that confirmed the presence of the amoeba. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the man's diagnosis was 'amoebic dysentery,' and not specifically the brain-eating amoeba. The Kaohsiung City Health Bureau stated there were no confirmed cases of 'Naegleria fowleri' meningitis in Taiwan, with the most recent case dating back to 2023.
