Many Hepatitis C Patients Unwilling to Accept Treatment: Changhua Christian Hospital: Eliminating Misunderstandings Is the First Priority

Reported 8 months ago

According to Good Doctor News on June 20, 2024, reporter Mei-Ching Tseng from Changhua reported that Changhua Christian Hospital has been providing full health insurance coverage for oral antiviral drugs for hepatitis C virus-positive patients since January 2019. However, there are still concerns among some people regarding treatment. Through analyzing 519 hepatitis C virus-positive patients, the hospital found that about 40% of individuals lack understanding of the necessity of treatment. The hospital is actively promoting the national plan to eradicate hepatitis C by simplifying screening processes and encouraging patients to receive oral antiviral drug treatment. Factors affecting patients' willingness to receive treatment were investigated, with reasons for reluctance including being asymptomatic, unaware of the necessity of treatment, and concerns about interferon side effects. Case studies, such as that of a patient named Huang, demonstrated the importance of educating patients about the benefits of treatment to overcome misconceptions and encourage acceptance of treatment.
