Following destructive storms in the Midwest, such as in South Sioux City, Nebraska, where Rick Satterwhite had to pump water out of his basement due to flooding from the Missouri River, many residents are realizing the importance of flood insurance. However, data shows that only about 26,500 flood insurance policies have been issued across the flooded states of Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. The lack of insurance can lead to financial burdens on homeowners and increased reliance on nonprofits and government assistance, especially as climate change exacerbates flood risks.
