Scientists from France and Germany propose in a preprint for the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics that Mars' moon Phobos may have originated from a comet, suggesting that Deimos could also be from the same celestial body. By analyzing images taken by the Mars Express spacecraft, the scientists found similarities between Phobos and comets influenced by Jupiter, indicating that Mars' gravitational field captured Phobos in the distant past. Japan plans to launch the Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission to study Phobos and Deimos, collecting samples that could provide insights into the mysterious origins of these Martian moons.
