During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, amid the ongoing debate between southern and northern meat zongzi flavors, Mayor of Taipei and Chairman of the People First Party, Ko Wen-je, supported 'Eastern zongzi' after taking a trip to Hualien. He embarked on a two-day bicycle tour in Hualien to help revitalize tourism and the local economy following the setback caused by the 0403 earthquake. Mayor Ko humorously shared his love for the three-layered meat and salted egg yolk zongzi, popular in Hualien, which also included the local specialty of peeled chili peppers for an extra spicy kick that he enjoyed. He also revealed that his wife Chen Pei-chi loves the crispy and spicy peeled chili peppers, especially when used to make chicken soup. Inviting everyone to visit Hualien and try its delicious cuisine, Mayor Ko also emphasized the beauty of the region's landscapes and the convenience of ordering Hualien specialties online if visiting in person is not possible at the moment.
