Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been silent on former President Trump, surprisingly spoke out to defend him after a guilty verdict was delivered by the jury. McConnell criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for bringing the case, predicted the conviction would be overturned, and suggested Trump's conviction could unify the GOP. Other Republican senators, including Sen. Susan Collins and Senate Republican Whip John Thune, also rallied to Trump's defense, criticizing the politically motivated prosecution and calling for a focus on ending the Biden-Schumer agenda instead.
