McDonald's is dismantling the AI ordering technology in its US Drive-Thru restaurants due to unexpected glitches, causing many frustrated consumers to share their 'encounters' online. The system was tested in 2019 but proved unreliable, with videos surfacing on TikTok showing order mishaps like repeatedly getting 'cream' instead of caramel ice cream, mix-ups resulting in extra teas, and unexplained additions of hundreds of dollars worth of nuggets or bacon to orders. McDonald's plans to remove the AI system from over 100 US restaurants by the end of July, although the company asserts that AI technology will still be part of its future operations.
