A 20-year-old medical student surnamed Hung brought three knives onto a Taichung subway car on May 21st and randomly attacked two passengers, causing injuries until overpowered by multiple passengers. The Taichung District Prosecutors' Office concluded that Hung, motivated by dissatisfaction with family and schooling, planned to commit murder to gain national attention and chose to act on the 10th anniversary of the Zheng Jie murder case to raise public awareness of his actions and the death penalty issue. Prosecutors deemed Hung mentally stable during the crime and have charged him with attempted murder and public intimidation, seeking a heavy sentence. The incident has caused widespread public fear and distrust, impacting social relations and daily commute confidence.
