Medieval Cat-Killing City of Ypres Turns into Paradise for Cat Lovers

Reported 11 months ago

The city of Ypres in Belgium, which had a dark history of throwing live cats from towers during medieval times, recently hosted a cat-themed celebration where cat lovers from around the world dressed up as cats, participated in cat parades, and bought cat merchandise. The city's tradition of cat killings in the past has now transformed into a cat festival where toy cats are thrown instead, celebrating both the love for cats and acknowledging the dark history of cat killings in the city. The event, known as the Kattenstoet or Cat Parade, takes place every 3 years and was postponed in 2021 due to the pandemic, making this year's celebration long-awaited with about 50,000 cat enthusiasts gathering from across the globe.
