Meta has identified networks that are spreading misleading content that is likely generated by artificial intelligence.

Reported 4 months ago

Meta has identified networks on its Facebook and Instagram platforms pushing deceptive content likely generated by AI, including comments praising Israel's handling of the Gaza war. The social media company attributed this campaign to a Tel Aviv-based marketing firm, STOIC, impersonating Jewish students and African Americans. While Meta has been detecting basic AI-generated profile photos since 2019, this report is the first to disclose the use of text-based generative AI technology since late 2022. Despite concerns about AI facilitating more effective disinformation campaigns, Meta executives stated that their ability to disrupt influence networks has not been significantly impacted. They have removed the Israeli campaign early and highlighted six covert influence operations disrupted in the first quarter, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance ahead of upcoming elections in the European Union and the United States.
