Meta Platforms Inc. removed AI-generated influence campaigns from China and Israel, among other countries, from its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as part of its efforts to combat disinformation. The company found networks using generative AI to create fake images, videos, and text to influence users but stated that it did not impact its ability to disrupt these networks. Meta's policy director mentioned that while the use of AI in disinformation campaigns is not highly sophisticated currently, these networks are expected to evolve their tactics. Meta has updated its policies to label, rather than remove, misleading AI-generated content on its platforms and is working on detecting and labeling images created by AI tools for transparency, especially in preparation for the upcoming 2024 election cycle.
