Meta, owner of Facebook, plans to use data from users in privacy-focused Europe to train its AI models as it competes with rivals like OpenAI and Google. Despite facing data protection concerns due to stringent EU privacy laws, Meta aims to utilize public data from European users to enhance its Llama AI large language model's understanding of regional languages, cultures, and trending topics. The company has faced complaints from activist Max Schrems' group NOYB, urging privacy watchdogs to halt Meta's AI training plans. Meta emphasizes they won't use private messages or content from European users under 18 and has informed 2 billion European users about their plans with an opt-out option available.
