Mexican mayor assassinated following election of first female president

Reported 4 months ago

Just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as Mexico's first woman president, gunmen killed Yolanda Sánchez, the female mayor of Cotija, Mexico. Sánchez, the first woman to hold the position, was ambushed and shot 19 times in an attack believed to be orchestrated by an organized crime group. Her murder is one of many recent political killings in Mexico, with over 20 candidates assassinated since September. Sánchez had previously faced death threats and kidnapping, refusing to comply with demands from criminal groups. The violence surrounding the election has raised concerns, with Sheinbaum's defeated rival criticizing the state's role in the competition.
