In August 2025, Mexico overtook the United States as the second-largest destination for Brazilian beef, according to Brazil's beef lobby Abiec. This shift occurred after the US imposed significant tariffs on Brazilian beef, reducing its shipments. From August 1-25, Brazil exported 10,200 metric tons of beef to Mexico, valued at $58.8 million, while exports to the US dropped to 7,800 tons worth $43.6 million. With exports to Mexico tripling compared to last year, Brazil aims to expand its meatpacking plants authorized for Mexican exports and negotiate a free trade agreement, although the US remains a critical market for Brazilian beef.
