Mexico's incoming government, led by President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, will abandon the goal set by outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to decrease yellow corn imports and achieve self-sufficiency in corn production. The new agriculture minister, Julio Berdegue, announced that the focus will shift towards maintaining self-sufficiency in white corn for tortillas and reducing deforestation by half in the agriculture sector during Sheinbaum's six-year term. The decision marks a departure from Lopez Obrador's policy of reducing yellow corn imports to boost local production due to the demand for livestock feed and ongoing trade disputes with the U.S. over genetically-modified corn.
