Microsoft has agreed to pay $14 million to settle claims from the California Civil Rights Department that it unlawfully penalized employees who took medical or family-care leave by denying them promotions, raises, and other benefits, disproportionately affecting women and people with disabilities. The settlement, which requires approval from a state judge, follows a multiyear investigation and includes Microsoft hiring an independent consultant to ensure non-discriminatory policies and providing training to managers and HR personnel.
