Microsoft confirmed the termination of the experimental project 'Project Natick' which aimed to store large amounts of data in underwater data centers, initiated in 2013. Although the project resulted in valuable lessons on underwater data center design and operations, Microsoft decided not to build underwater data centers based on this experience but to utilize it in other scenarios. Despite the termination of 'Project Natick,' various entities including companies in China are exploring underwater server designs, while Intel and partners are developing immersion cooling technologies. The EU is conducting a feasibility study on the 'Advanced Space Cloud for European Net zero emission and Data sovereignty (ASCEND)' project to operate data centers in space to reduce climate impact. Microsoft continues to propose energy-efficient data center operation methods like 'Project Silica,' which uses laser etching on quartz glass to store large amounts of cold data and reduce energy consumption during cold data storage.
